Turning A Negative Into A Positive

One morning this past week, one of the 4am mornings, I woke up exhausted.

And when I wake up feeling this way, I’ll usually put a show on for the girls while I try and get another hour of sleep, on the sofa.

This particular morning I woke up to my youngest Quinn going through daddy’s wallet. I recall seeing it on the coffee table before lying down but didn’t really think anything of it. (However, in retrospect I don’t know why I didn’t move it. She’s pretty sneaky like I was at her age!)

So, as you can probably imagine (this maybe has even happened to you) EVERYTHING was all over the floor. I wasn’t happy with her and I told her that it was disrespectful and not her business. And I put everything up of the counter for Deryk to deal with when he got up.

And so, when he woke up and saw the mess, he also told Quinn of his disappointment. He was frustrated and short on time so I started to clean and organize it for him. By this time it had been 2 hours and I wasn’t feeling anything negative about it anymore. It was time to look at it with a different perspective.  With a positive perspective.

So I shared this with him and I’ll share it with you in case you need a little perspective shift with something going on in your life.

Everything has a reason.

Everything is here to teach us something…or show us something.

Deryk's wallet was essentially packed with garbage. With old business cards and old credit cards and old ticket stubs. I put everything back that I knew was important and everything else went into a baggie for him to deal with later.

When he got home from work that day, he even commented how light his wallet felt. And then he we was able to go through the pile I left and make a decision on what to keep without the frustration that he felt earlier that morning.

Old things can hold us back. It’s stagnant energy. It’s the past.

It was time to let go. So even though Quinn was in the wrong and had no business pulling apart her daddy’s wallet, it happened and actually helped her father to let go of a past that he didn’t even realize he was holding on to.

And really? It was accessible. If things are important to us we need to put them in a safe space. I teach this to my girls all the time.

What else can we learn from this?

Learn to take the time to go through our things. Learn to let go of the things that we don’t love and that we don’t need.

This can be a wallet, our closets, a purse...and I hear you loud and clear universe. It’s time to clean my car :)

Tell me a story about when you turned a negative into a positive! I would love to hear from you!
