Intuitive Eating

For two years now I have been actively seeking to find answers to my health, (I’ve had eczema now for 9 years), and to have balance and moderation without following a specific meal plan. And what I’ve learned is how conflicting all of the information on healthy eating is!

Working with different wholistic nutritionists and doctors to improve my health and my relationship with food, I have come to realize that everyone has their own perspective and that there is no right answer.

The right answer is to do what feels right for me.

So I turned inward and listened closely to what my body intuitively needs to feel good about myself, my mental health and my well-being.

And for me that means that eating a balanced diet actually does mean living with restrictions. My all or nothing mentality runs deep and I’ve learned this is okay!! If eating an unhealthy treat sends me into a negative spiral, then why even go there?!

No two people are the same.

What feels good and helps you to maintain a healthy lifestyle, is the right choice for you.

So at least for now, I’m choosing not to have wheat, oats, rice…anything with white sugar or white flour (goodbye oat fudge bars from Starbucks) and limited dairy. I’m also cutting out all nightshades and limiting foods with lectins. (Don’t worry, this leaves an abundant amount of food choices!!) I’ve recognized what my triggers are and even while desperately trying to live with balance and moderation, I’ve realized that for me, restricting certain foods is what sets me up for success.

I know how it feels to have a healthy mind and a healthy body. My goal is to stay in that place of positivity and energy. With two young children at home, making healthy choices that keep me in this space are super important. By making myself a priority, I teach far more than a healthy lifestyle to my girls. I teach respect for my body. I teach the decision to choose and the right to say no.

I feel empowered when I say no to unhealthy foods, or even to healthy foods with ingredients that don’t work for my body. I’m going to trust myself and take back the control, making the choices I know will nourish my mind, body and spirit. I’m ready to feel like myself again.

I’m excited that my nutrition journey over the past 14 years (my first sensitivity test in 2005 revealed wheat and white sugar as problematic) has led me back here. It’s been almost a week of saying no (I was offered homemade pizza and milk chocolate covered almonds! There was even peanut butter cheesecake!!) and I feel really good!

If you’re in a place of sluggishness, have mind fog, or you’re overeating and really would like to feel happier, maybe it’s time to make some healthier choices surrounding food. While there’s a whole world of wonderful treats out there, at the end of the day, if they don’t make us feel our best, are they really worth that moment on our lips? All the treats we love can be recreated with ingredients that will help our bodies to feel good and even to heal.

So I’m going to continue to choose those. And I hope you’ll choose the ones that feel good for you.

Cheers to wherever you are on your health journey. Trust exactly where you are. Ask questions and the answers will come. And learn to listen intuitively to your body. You have all of the answers within you.
